Moving to Self Enrolment in ESR Learning Management

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS FT is a large Acute Trust providing care to the residents of Norfolk, North Suffolk and further afield. With over 10,000 employees it is essential that training and development is managed in an effective and robust manner, enabling our staff to easily enrol on the training they are required to complete.

Talking to us about their project to move to Self Enrolment in ESR Sarah Pask, the Associate Director of OD & Learning said:

We moved across to classroom bookings on ESR from the summer 2021. The timing worked well as our classroom activity was heavily reduced which gave us the opportunity to closely monitor the impact of the change and educate staff on the new process in a contained way.

Staff had routinely requested that there was one system to access their learning, and we are now able to sign-post staff to one place for both their eLearning and classroom courses and this change has helped support that feedback.

One of the best new benefits is the ability for the Norfolk and Norwich University (NNUH) team to run reports on non-attendance rates, the previous system was very flat, and the non-attendance data did not exist. ESR captures data on reasons why staff have cancelled from courses which has helped support some targeted work to raise awareness of the impact of classroom non-attendance.

There is one outstanding issue to be resolved as part of the project. NNUH want the ability to re-advertise courses automatically when a participant withdraws from a course, so at the moment this is a manual process and the team have put this forward as a future enhancement. Sarah said:

The current Waitlisting Functionality only works up to 7 days prior to the class start date, which is the period when we find most staff are withdrawing from the training, hence the need to manage this manually. We are hopeful of a future ESR enhancement that will allow local flexibility on when class Waitlisting Functionality will remain active until.

She concluded:

So far, the move has proved successful, and we have continued to sustain our Trust-wide mandatory training compliance above 90%. The introduction of self-enrolment through ESR has been met overall with a positive response from our staff. It has also opened up additional opportunities, such as the use of the Class Administration access to enable specific Training areas the ability to manage their own class schedules and bookings. We are now piloting a group of trainers who deliver classroom training to update the training completions directly through the Class Update Portlet, removing administrative effort and allowing the Training Team to focus efforts on other priorities.
